Why is it worth thinking about work design options?

  • To stay fit and healthy: Health challenges can increase with age. An adapted work design can help to reduce stress and increase well-being. This maintains performance.
  • To learn something new: At 50, people have often gained extensive professional experience. This can be a good opportunity to reorient yourself professionally, learn new skills or work in a different field. Health reasons can also mean that work tasks have to be adapted. If financially possible, there may also be a desire to dedicate more time to hobbies or family commitments (e.g. looking after grandchildren).
  • To prepare for retirement: A gradual reduction in the workload can ease the transition to retirement and help to make financial and personal adjustments.

Work design options offered by Migros

Ask your manager and your HR Business Partner about the possibilities in your company and in your business unit.

Partial retirement
  • You can reduce your workload and withdraw part of your pension fund pension at the same time if you are already 58 years old. This ensures a smoother transition to retirement.
Arch-shaped career path / change to a new function
  • The idea of an arch-shaped career is that you reduce your workload before you retire. At best, you will continue to work for a few years more. That way, you don't go from 100 to 0 when you retire. It is also possible to change the area of activity, for example to relinquish a management function.
Flexible work models
  • Migros offers flexible working hours and part-time options for employees who wish to reduce their workload. Flexibility can relate to the place of work, working hours or the organisation of work. This means that the work activity can be better adapted to your personal needs. Flexible working models also make it possible to continue working after retirement.
Continue working beyond the statutory reference age
  • In principle, it is possible to continue working after the statutory reference age if you want to, your employer agrees and your health allows it.

This will help you with your planning

  • Development meeting:
Discuss with your manager how you would like to design the third career phase. What are your needs and possibilities? During such a conversation, you can also talk about further education and training and find out what your company offers in this regard.
  • Financial planning:
A reduction in the workload or a change in the area of responsibility may result in a reduction in salary. It is therefore important that you find out about your financial situation before making a decision. Find out more here

This is what you can do today

Migros offers many opportunities to actively design your work even when you are over 50. It is important to make use of the offers and actively communicate with the manager in order to realise your own wishes and needs.

Have a conversation with your manager

Regular discussions with the manager are important. Here you can talk about wishes and opportunities, e.g. a change in your workload or other developments in your area of responsibility.

Take advantage of the training and further education programmes

Migros offers many courses and training programmes, and external training courses are also supported. Think about the area in which further training makes sense for you and discuss this with your manager.

Maintain your network

Exchanging ideas with colleagues can open up new perspectives and help you to network well within the company.

Be open to change

Staying flexible and being open to new tasks or working models can increase job satisfaction and open up new opportunities.

Stay active and co-create your future

The IBAW, Institute for Vocational Education and Training, offers courses and training programmes in the fields of business and IT that are specially tailored to your needs. Or would you like to brush up on your language skills or learn a new language? The Migros Club School supports you in expanding your language skills.

With targeted further training, you can remain professionally flexible in the second half of your life, secure your employability and actively shape your future in a self-determined way.

Good to know: Many Migros companies will support you with further training or cover part of the costs. Find out about your options from your employer.
